The last place Brody wanted to be right now was at work. These past few days had really kicked his ass and the only place he really wanted to be right now was at home. In bed. Summer conditioning had started for football last week and it seemed like that’s what his life was centered around at this point. He wasn’t even that great at it. I mean, obviously he was good enough to make the team but he only played for fun in all honesty….and the attention from girls, obviously. However, conditioning every summer always made him wonder why he did it for fun. All the work put into it was worth it in the end, however, when they won games in the fall. Not that winning the games really mattered to him either but winning always felt better than losing. Plus there was usually a wicked party at his or one of his teammate’s homes if they did win, which he was all for. But again, all the effort now was starting to wear him down and the fact that he had a good six hour shift ahead of him wasn’t helping any. Brody loved his job, don’t get him wrong. It was just after a long morning practice it was the last place he wanted to be. But then again, today he was scheduled to work with Effy, which made the whole situation a little bit better.
As soon as he got home from practice, Brody jumped in the shower. His parents weren’t home…as always. Both his mother and father worked for the airlines. His father was a pilot and his mother was a flight attendant. More often than not Brody had the house all to himself, which he didn’t really mind, but it tended to get lonely. Once he was clean he pulled on a pair of tan shorts and a black tshirt. Before leaving the house he shoved his iphone and wallet into his pockets and grabbed his keys off the small table before walking out the front door. He climbed into the driver’s side of his pickup truck and turned the key causing the engine to burst into life. He pulled out onto the main street and within ten minutes he was parked in the small lot behind the family restaurant that signed his paychecks. He climbed out of the truck and walked up to the back door which was propped open. He walked in and through the kitchen before reaching the small office where he saw the familiar blonde. He walked into the office and purposefully bumped into Effy as he reached for his timecard on the shelf. “Oh, my bad,” he said with a genuine sarcasm that made him chuckle lightly. He crouched down beside her and the desk so that he could more comfortably write in the time. “You lucky girl, you get to spend the next six hours with me.” He said with a wink as he placed his card back in its rightful place.

She had put on something casual, just a t-shirt and short. It was very hot outside and she hated the idea of sweating. She didn't want to stink at work. She had always left twenty minutes early before her shift, because she lived quite far away from work. Although her parents had always told her to get herself a car, she had always refused to as she would rather walk than drive. She came from an upper class family and her parents could give her afford anything she want, but she did not want to be always dependent on them. She wanted to able to earn her own money, instead of asking them for money or things. Effy pushed the door of the family restaurant and walked in. Few of her other friends working there greeted her and she greeted them with a smile. That was one thing about Effy. She was always smiley and patient towards others, which made her suit her job as a waitress even more, since customers at the restaurant can be very ornery and annoying at times.
She signed in her time on the timecard and she got herself changed into her work uniform. She fixed her uniform and hair so she would look neat. Not long after that, a guy bumped into her and she screamed 'ouch' before she realized that it was Brody. Brody was one of the popular kids in school. He was in the football team and he usually got a lot of attention from other girls, like the cheerleaders. Unlike Brody, Effy was invisible to people in her school, unless they needed favors from her, which she would never reject and she would even be bullied at times by the popular girls in school. However, Brody and Effy were best friends. Brody was the best guy friend she had. They spent a lot of time together; in school, at work and even outside school and work. "Hey Brody!" She greeted him excitedly and gave him a quick hug. It was always fun to be around Brody. He always knew how to have a good time anywhere and everywhere. "I guess i'm the lucky girl! I forgot that we are scheduled to work together today." She told him and grinned. "Please don't get yourself in any trouble today, alright?" She said in a half pleading tone. "How was football practice?" She asked him. She knew that summer conditioning for football had started and she knew that he must be so exhausted from the long practice. "I bet you had fun from all those attention you got today, huh?" she joked. "If you're tired, you can rest here and i can go cover for you. Its not very crowded, after all." She suggested. |

Some people saw Brody as a complete jerk; most of which were girls he’d screwed over. Being popular really wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. He never imagined he’d become the womanizer he had but long behold here he was breaking hearts like they were nothing. He’d always been a sweet kid who got into careless trouble every now and again. High school changed that, however. Popularity got the best of him and he started falling into the peer pressure of his fellow ‘elites’. He never thought he, out of anyone, would fall into the trap that was peer pressure. After testing the waters and sleeping around with a few girls there was no going back. It seemed like the cool thing to do at the time and now it has just become a bad trait of his. It was almost expected and girls flooded to him for the attention. He didn’t complain, obviously, but he sort of wished he could turn back the clock and go back to being the Brody he used to be. It seemed like he made more friends than enemies back then. But he couldn’t change the past so he just had to live with the consequences.
Working with friends always seemed to make the time go faster. Everyone who worked at the small restaurant had become something of a family. However, when school started up again, they would all fall back into their designated social groups. They didn’t seem to mind though because they would all reunite shortly when they worked their shifts at the restaurant just as if they were all best friends again. As for Effy, Brody had to admit that even though they didn’t run in the same circles at school, she was one of his best friends. He could go to her for anything and he felt that she could do the same with him. He smiled wide when she reacted to him bumping into her but then realized who it was. He let and arm wrap around her lower back as she hugged him quickly. “Hey yourself,” he said giving her a small squeeze before releasing her from his grip and writing on his timecard. When she said she forgot they were scheduled together he let his jaw drop playfully as if he was totally offended. “How could you forget you were working with me today! Rude.” He said with a slight chuckle and a roll of his eyes as he leaned his back against the desk. At the mention of causing trouble a mischievous grin crept across his features. “Come on now, you know me better than that. I can’t go anywhere without causing at least a little bit of havoc. I just can’t help myself...” he said with another playful wink.
Ugh. Football. Not his subject of choice. “It was hell, as always,” he said with a shrug. “You know, I didn’t get seduced by not one cheerleader today. I must be off my game,” he said matter-a-factly with a small smile. “I mean, I look okay, right? My hotness didn’t just, like, disappear overnight did it?” he said raising a brow at her happily as he looked down at himself and then back up at her. He really wasn’t all that full of himself, he just liked to put her on the spot and make her feel a bit uncomfortable. He rolled his eyes when she offered to cover for him. “No chance! I plan on making more tips than you tonight if it kills me! Ten bucks says I can.” He said challenging her playfully.

"Maybe I just wasn't really looking forward to work with you." She joked. "I know you well enough to tell that you can cause trouble anywhere and everywhere. So I am begging you. For the next six hours, don't do anything stupid." Effy was being dead serious. She was the kind of girl who didn't cause troubles at all. She hated getting into troubles. She had known Brody for quite a while now, and although they were completely different, they could connect and be comfortable with each other in a weird kind of way. Effy had always gotten her heart broken by guys like Brody. Those kind of guys would go after girls and made them believe that feel they were loved. But once they were bored, they would dump the girls just like that. Effy knew exactly how those awful those girls felt. They must had felt like they were not good enough or they didn't deserve happiness at all. Effy had those kinds of feelings a lot. She had been dumped by most of the guys she dated. And although all her friends kept telling her that he didn't deserve a girl like her or that the guys were jerks, Effy had always believed that there was something wrong with her. That was why Effy hated it when Brody get near girls just to have them crushed into million little pieces. Not that everyone was like Effy, who took relationships seriously, she just felt that it was wrong to toy with someone's feelings like that.
"You've to start loving the things you do, you know." Effy began. She knew that Brody joined the football team for fun and it was not like he had ever taken it seriously. "Maybe you should ask them." Effy said shortly, feeling uncomfortable. Brody had always been straight forward. He knew that asking Effy those kind of questions would make her feel uncomfortable and it wasn't the first time he did that. He loved to make her feel uneasy. No matter how close they both were, she would always feel awkward when asked this kind of questions. "Okay then. You know you can never get more tips than I do, right?" She said, reminding him. "Go get yourself change. We need to get to work now." She gently pushed him to the changing room so he could get change into his work uniform. |
